The Bank of Industry (BOI) has described Nigerian artisans and technicians as the backbone of inclusive economic growth and key to the country’s future industrial development.

The Managing Director of BOI, Dr Olasupo Olusi, said at the Nigerian Artisans Leadership Summit 2025, on Wednesday in Abuja.

Olusi said that with more than 12 million artisans nationwide, the sector held immense potential for grassroots enterprise and national transformation.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the summit was themed “Unlocking the Inherent Potential of Nigerian Artisans and Technicians”.

It brought together artisan leaders, development partners, government officials, and other stakeholders to discuss challenges and opportunities within the informal sector.

Olusi was represented by Ms Mabel Ndagi, Executive Director, Public Sector and Intervention Programmes of the bank.

He said that the bank’s vision for inclusive development was centred on enabling artisans to thrive through better access to finance, training and integration into formal economic systems.

“The theme of this summit goes to the heart of inclusive development.

“It reflects a vision of Nigeria where talent is not wasted due to lack of support and where informal skills are not excluded from formal opportunities,”he said.

Olusi identified several key challenges artisans faced, including limited access to affordable finance, outdated equipment, poor business structures, lack of export participation and inadequate research and development.

To address these issues, Olusi said that BOI had structured its 2025 to 2027 corporate strategy around six thematic pillars.

“These include supporting Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), youth empowerment and skills development and digital economy expansion.

“It also includes advancing climate sustainability, investing in critical infrastructure and promoting gender inclusion.

“These focus areas are not just bureaucratic categories, they are lenses through which we are re-imagining support for artisans and grassroots entrepreneurs,” he explained.

Olusi reaffirmed BOI’s commitment to providing both financial and advisory support to Nigerian enterprises that sustain local economies and spur national growth.

“Our vision as a development finance institution is to transform Nigeria’s industrial landscape by empowering the enterprises that power this nation.

“At the heart of this vision are artisans and grassroots entrepreneurs like you.

“And true national development cannot be outsourced or imported, but must be built by skilled hands and passionate hearts,” he said.

The Artisan Leadership Summit marks another step in BOI’s broader drive to deepen financial inclusion, unlock the potential within the informal sector and promote sustainable livelihoods across the country. (NAN)

Discrimination, violations against PWDs: NGO inaugurates Rights in Action project

Discrimination, violations against PWDs: NGO inaugurates Rights in Action project

CBM Global Disability Inclusion, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) has inaugurated the” Rights in Action” project to address intersectional discrimination and human rights violations against Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

Inaugurating the project on Tuesday in Abuja, Mr Abdulazeez Musa, Country Director, CBM Global Disability Inclusion, said the project aimed to address all forms of marginalisation against PWDs.

According to Musa, the project which is an Organisation of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) advocacy project is funded by the Finland Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“The project is being facilitated by CBM Global Disability Inclusion and implemented by our technical partners, Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) and Inclusive Friends Association (IFA).

“What the project aims to achieve is to help PWDs to be able to achieve their goals and live their lives with dignity, to enjoy their full fundamental human rights just like anybody else.”

Musa added that the project also aimed to make PWDs have the ability and the capacity to self-advocate.

“On this project, we will be focusing largely on the marginalised groups because even among PWDs we have those that are also further marginalised.

“So you can imagine the layer of marginalisation and discrimination. An example of such a group is persons with learning difficulty or challenges and sometimes even the deaf community,” he said.

The country director explained that the organisation would work with such groups to strengthen their organisational capacity with a view to designing projects, mobilising their members and speaking out for themselves.

He said the OPDs would come up with the priorities themselves and design the interventions as they see fit and the technical partners would provide the needed support.

He added that a key aspect of the project would be to analyse how the community sees PWDs which is at the core of the issues.

Musa noted that Nigeria was not short of laws because it had passed the Disability Rights Act, adding that implementation had been the issue as people continue to see PWDs as persons that cannot contribute to nation building.

“So this project aims to address that; and we hope to see that this law is now being fully implemented by being allocated funds during the budgeting process and PWDs are living just like any other person in Nigeria,” said.

He disclosed that the project would run for two years, commencing in two pilot states of Adamawa in the Northeast and the Federal Capital Territory.

In the same vein, one of the implementing partners, IFA, said the project would aid in closing the marginalised gaps against and among PWDs.

The Executive Director, IFA, Grace Jerry, said the expectation of IFA would be to spotlight the most marginalised organisations that haven’t really been made part of major policies to drive inclusion processes in Nigeria.

“So for us, it is spotlighting those organisations and empowering them to drive policies for themselves, by themselves, and for the general good of the marginalised group.

“For instance, you talk about the deaf-blind community. This is a community of persons with disabilities who haven’t really gained much recognition in terms of their needs and their rights.

“This project, therefore seeks to amplify such marginalised groups and, of course, other groups giving them an opportunity to drive policy for themselves.

Mr Abdullahi Usman, President, JONAPWD, and also the implementing partner of the project, says the dream of the project is to see the underrepresented groups among PWDs get their own rights like others.

“This is because although collectively, PWDs in this country are fighting for their rights, but among us, there are also some PWDs who are also discriminated against within the community.

“For instance, people who have intellectual issues, people with cerebral palsy, the deaf and blind and persons with albinism are often denied their rights because of claims that they are not PWDs.

“So my expectation at the end of this project is to see that other communities of PWDs fully understand that all PWDs have equal rights with people without disabilities,” he said.

A representative from the Ministry of Women Affairs, Ms Sweet Okundaye, Director Legal Services, commended CBM Global Disability Inclusion for the initiative and promised the ministry’s support to the project.

Similarly, Ms Oluchi Adieze, Desk Officer, Rights of Persons with Disabilities, National Human Rights Commission, said the commission was established to promote, protect, and enforce the rights of every human living in Nigeria.

Adieze pledged the commission’s support to the project and urged the implementing partners to leverage its state offices to address human rights challenges from the grassroots. (NAN)

The open national trials organised by the Nigeria Para-Powerlifting Federation feature no fewer than 60 athletes from across the country.

The event began with a successful random screening conducted by the Nigeria Anti-Doping Committee (NAC) to ensure that the athletes played clean.

Folashade Oluwafemiayo of Delta, with a best lift of 160kg, won the +86kg female category on Day 1 to set a new world record after smashing the best standard record of 130kg.

Tolulope Ogundolie of Edo with a best lift of 110kg emerged winner of the 45kg female category, as she beat the best standard record of 95kg.

Also, Ekiti Christiana Adetolu’s best lift of 100kg, which saw her finish second in the 45kg female category, was good enough to surpass the best standard record.

Rukayat Ajiboye of Delta, with a best lift 122kg on Day 2, won the 50kg women category to beat the best standard record of 91 kg.

Ifeoluwa Alake of Lagos State emerged winner in the 61kg female category after posting a best lift of 126kg to smash the best standard world record of 91kg.

Similarly, Oyo State’s Toyosi Osewa’s best lift of 115kg, which saw her settle for the second position in the 45kg female category, was good enough to surpass the world best standard.

Mark Onyinyechi of Abia emerged winner of the 67kg female category after posting a best lift of 145kg to beat the best standard record of 126kg.

Chiamaka Ani and Lucy Ejike, both of Enugu State, finished first and second, respectively, in the 73kg female category after securing a best lift of 132kg and 130kg to beat the world record lift of 126kg.

Rita Ferdinand of Oyo State posted an impressive best lift of 151kg to emerge the winner of the 79kg female category and beat the best standard record of 125kg.

Thomas Kure of Delta, with a best lift of 207kg, won the 80kg male category and smashed the best standard record of 174kg.

On Day 2, Anifat Ganiyu of Osun, with a best lift of 97kg, emerged winner of the 41kg female category to beat the best standard record of 78k

Also, Mufutau Rasaq of Osun emerged as the winner of the 65kg male category after he secured a best lift of 190kg to beat the best standard record of 167kg.

Day 3 results saw Esther Oyema of Edo securing a best lift of 127kg in the 55kg female category to clinch the top spot and beat the standard record of 112kg.

NAN  reports that there were also some good podium finish performances recorded in other categories at the open national trials, which, however, did not surpass the best standard record.

Results on Day 1 saw Blessing Ibe of Rivers State with a best lift of 125kg emerge as the winner of the 86kg female category.

Daniel Omogbai of Edo, with a best lift of 190kg, clinched top spot in the 107kg male category.

Yakubu Adesokan of Oyo was the winner of the 49kg male category after securing a best lift of 152kg.

Roland Ezuruike of Delta and Blessing Kayode of Edo were tied in 1st position in the 54kg male category after they both posted a best lift of 165kg and 177kg, respectively.

Also, Taiwo Akingbade of Oyo State posted an impressive best lift of 155kg to emerge the winner of the 72kg male category.

Idris Rilwanu of Rivers with a best lift of 200kg clinched the top spot in 88kg male category.

Taiwo Tolulope of Edo emerged winner of the 97kg male category after he recorded a best lift of 160 kg.

Ruel Ishaku, the Technical Director of the Federation, told NAN that with more camping and training for the athletes in shape, they will produce even better results.

“These camps and training are very important for our athletes as it constantly keeps them in shape ahead of national and international competitions.

“We need more camping to make them continue to train because the more they train, the more chances of producing better results that will surpass the world’s best standard records.

“For instance, we have just concluded this competition now, but if the athletes go and relax, it will hurt their next performance.

“So, they need to be called to camp regularly to help them to keep improving on their performances,” he said.

Ishaku said that even those athletes who couldn’t beat the best standard, their records at the trials were still good enough for a podium finish at any international competition.(NAN)

Abuja, June 18, 2025 (NAN) The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has conferred an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (DSc Honoris Causa) on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike.

The Vice-Chancellor of university, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, disclosed during the presentation of the conferment letter to Wike, at his residence in Abuja on Wednesday.

Georgewill added that the official decoration and presentation of the certificate would be on July 26, as part of activities to celebrate the university’s 50th anniversary.

He explained that the Act of the university empowered it to award honorary doctorate degrees to distinguished Nigerians who have contributed immensely to the growth of the nation.

He said that the university’s Senate approved the conferment based on Wike’s track record in public service and contributions to the development of the university and Rivers.

“Today marks the beginning of the 50th anniversary celebration of the university of Port Harcourt, and there is no better place to commence the ceremony than where we are today.

“You are also a distinguished alumnus of the university, and so the university is honouring you not only for your service but also your service to the University of Port Harcourt.

“Your footprints are just there for everybody to see in the university.

“We are proud to be associated with you and the university is indeed very proud that you attended it; you have a DNA of that institution in you,’’ Georgewill said.

Mrs Gloria Chindah, Registrar and Secretary to Council had earlier conveyed the confinement of the honorary doctorate degree on the minister in a letter dated June 10.

“It is with profound please that I write to convey to you the decision of the Senate of the University of Port Harcourt at its Extra-Ordinary meeting held on Tuesday, 3rd June, 2025 to confer on you, an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (DSc Honoris Causa) in recognition of your visionary leadership and outstanding contributions to governance in Rivers and Nigeria.

“The conferment will be made at the 35th Convocation Ceremony of the university, which is scheduled to hold on Saturday, July 26, 2025,” she said.

Presenting the letter, the university’s Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Sen. Mao Ohuabunwa, thanked Wike for being a good ambassador of the university.

Ohuabunwa said: “The university is very proud of you because in every endeavour of your life you have made us proud.

“When you were the Chairman and Security Head of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers, you defended the university.

“When you were the minister of education, you attracted great developments to the university.

“Today the Faculty of Law is in the university because Nyesom Wike was the minister of education.”

He added that Wike did not only bring the faculty of law to the university, but he also built it.

“As if that was not enough, when you became the governor of Rivers, you made an indelible mark and built one of the best Convocation Arenas in West Africa.

“Few weeks back, when we came to congratulate you on your appointment as FCT Minister, you donated a multimedia centre for the convocation arena,” he said.

He informed the minister that the convocation arena would be inaugurated on July 25, as part of the university’s golden jubilee.

Responding, Wike thanked the university for the honour saying “for me, it is the university that gave me everything.

“I am a proud alumnus of the university where I first studied political science before studying another degree in law”.

He explained that as the then minister of education, he wondered why a conventional university did not have a faculty of law.

Wike added that he felt bad and made it a point of duty for the university to have the faculty, including the Faculty of Social Sciences, to separate it from the Faculty of Humanities.

He added that he equally built one of the best convocation arenas for the university because it deserves the best.

“If I am in a position to do more for my university, I will continue to do it.

“I am happy and I accepted the offer on behalf of my family, my wife and my friends and promised to be there to celebrate the golden jubilee of the university.

“I will continue to partner and support the university,” Wike said. (NAN)

Communities’ involvement key to countering terrorism threats – Centre

Communities’ involvement key to countering terrorism threats – Centre

The National Coordinator, National Counter Terrorism Centre – Office of the National Security Adviser (NCTC-ONSA), Maj.-Gen. Adamu Laka says active involvement of communities and other stakeholders is key to countering terrorism threats.

Laka said this at the opening of the National Counter Terrorism Strategy (NACTEST) stakeholders meeting on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said the meeting was at a pivotal juncture in the review of NACTEST as the terrorism threat landscape continues to evolve in complexity and scale.

The coordinator said the responses to the threats must also be adaptive, collaborative, and forward-looking.

Laka added that the approach had been anchored on two fundamental pillars, the whole-of-government and the whole-of-society approach.

According to him, the whole-of-government approach underscores the need for seamless interagency coordination.

“In the context of the recent crisis, the Ministry of Education has done an excellent job in providing a comprehensive and effective approach to counter-terrorism.

“It is only through this unity that we can effectively identify vulnerabilities, disrupt terrorist networks and prevent attacks before they occur.

“Terrorism is not just a security threat, but also, a social and ideological one.

“Therefore, countering it requires the active involvement of communities, civil society organisations, religious and traditional leaders, and the private sector,” he said.

He said the idea was to build trust, strengthen social cohesion, and actively counter extremist narratives at the grassroots.

Laka said the initial draft of the revised NACTEST had been successfully developed.

He urged the participants to carefully review the draft strategy, provide constructive feedback, and take responsibility for implementing the recommendations that fall within their mandate.

The coordinator said the goal was to ensure that the implementation of the strategy serves as a practical and dynamic framework that drives real and measurable impacts in counterterrorism efforts.

In his remarks, Commodore Ahmad Madawaki, Director of Policy and Strategy at the NCTC-ONSA, stated that NACTEST had provided a critical framework for counter-terrorism since its introduction in 2014.

“As the threat landscape evolved, it became clear that a review was necessary to ensure that our strategy remained effective and relevant.

“To support this review, we engaged in extensive consultations with various stakeholders, including our international partners.

“We had the privilege of collaborating with renowned international partners to leverage their expertise and best practices,” he said.

According to him, these interactions enriched our understanding of emerging trends and innovative approaches to countering terrorism. (NAN)

The Nigerian Army says the media has a responsibility to provide timely and useful information to the public while ensuring that such information does not compromise national security.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, said this on Tuesday in Abuja, at the opening of 2-day training for Media Operatives in Nigeria.

The training was organised by the Army Headquarters Department of Civil-Military Affairs.

Oluyede represented by the Director-General, Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre, Maj.-Gen. Gbemiga Adesina, noted that the Nigerian Army was taking a proactive approach in its collaboration with the media.

He said this was with a view to building trust and cooperation in the pursuit of national security.

He noted that the Nigerian army had strived to strike a strategic balance between protecting law-abiding citizens, national security, and the media’s right to disseminate information.

He explained that the training highlighted the significance of collaboration between the military and the media in addressing security challenges.

According to him, as security situations evolve, public institutions like the media must also adapt to meet the challenges of our time.

”This training is timely, especially with the Nigerian Army deployed in various theatres of operation.

”Its objective is to facilitate a conducive working relationship between the military and the media.

”I believe it is essential for security agencies and the media to engage in forums like this, as both parties work towards the same purpose; a secure Nigeria where every individual is important.

”I am encouraged by the array of speakers lined up for this event and I am confident that we will all be better equipped to advance national security.”

In his remarks, the Chief of Civil-Military Affairs (CCMA), Maj.-Gen. Gold Chibuisi, said that addressing the evolving national security challenges required a whole-of-society approach.

Chibuisi said that building a mutual understanding rooted in trust, accuracy, and balanced reporting between the military and media was crucial.

He revealed that the training was part of the Nigerian army’s commitment to enhancing civil-military relations and fostering an informed, professional, and secure information environment.

According to him, this strategic collaboration aims to expose media professionals to the Army’s doctrines, operations, and communication strategies.

”Accurate and constructive reporting can galvanize national support, enhance accountability, and contribute positively to collective security.

”A well-informed media is a strategic partner in our fight against security threats.

”This initiative bridges the knowledge gap between security forces and media practitioners, promoting responsible reporting that supports national security interests.”

The CCMA urged the participants to engage actively, ask questions, and seek clarity on complex issues.

He expressed appreciation to the COAS for his strategic direction and support, expressing optimism that the engagement would strengthen the rapport between the army and the media.

In his goodwill message, the Editor-In-Chief, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Mr Mufutau Ojo, commended the Nigerian army for organising the training.

Ojo said that the training underscored the need for deeper collaboration between the Nigerian media and the military, especially at a time when the nation was being assailed by multi-dimensional security challenges.

”This initiative we are witnessing today will certainly foster understanding and effective communication between the Nigerian military and the media; ultimately enhancing national security and public awareness,” he said.

Similarly, the Director News, Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Hajiya Halima Musa, stressed the need to understand how to consolidate the responsibilities of the military and media

Musa said that while the media was tasked by law to preserve national integrity and national peace, the armed forces were in charge of maintaining or preserving the territorial integrity of Nigeria, as well as national peace and integrity.

She called for access to timely and accurate information, adding that lack of accurate information gives room for speculation.

”We are not in the business of speculation, but it is always better if the information is granted to the media so that they can report it accurately to the satisfaction of everybody towards achieving national peace,” she said. (NAN)

FG inaugurates D-8 SME centre to deepen global cooperation, job creation

FG inaugurates D-8 SME centre to deepen global cooperation, job creation

By Lucy Ogalue

The Federal Government has called for stronger collaboration among developing countries to unlock job creation and ensure global competitiveness through enterprise development.

Mr Charlse Odii, Director-General, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), said this at the inauguration of the D-8 Centre for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Abuja on Tuesday.

Odii described the inauguration as a historic milestone that reflected Nigeria’s growing leadership in promoting South-South cooperation through entrepreneurship and innovation.

He said that the decision to site the centre in Nigeria was a strong endorsement of the resilience and creativity that defined the Nigerian business environment.

“The D-8 SME Center is more than a building. It is a bridge between continents, between policies and real impact, between big ideas and the small businesses that bring them to life.

“The initiative aligns with the vision of President Bola Tinubu, whose renewed hope agenda places enterprise, youth empowerment and regional partnerships at the core of Nigeria’s economic and diplomatic priorities,”he said.

According to him, Nigeria’s SME ecosystem is central to job creation, poverty reduction, and sustainable development.

He said that there was the need for stronger regional integration to tackle common challenges such as access to finance, infrastructure and regulatory barriers.

“No country can do it alone. SMEs in Bangladesh, Egypt, Malaysia, and Nigeria face similar constraints.

“The D-8 SME Center provides a platform to share solutions, open markets and harmonise standards,” he said.

Odii said that SMEDAN’s “Grow Nigerian” strategy was geared toward helping local businesses move beyond survival to becoming competitive players in regional and global value chains.

He said that the agency was focused on digitising SME operations, building industrial linkages, improving business regulations, and enhancing youth participation in the economy.

“This Centre will be a living hub for matchmaking, learning exchanges, policy alignment and co-investment among D-8 countries. It is about turning shared ideas into shared prosperity,” he said.

The Secretary-General of the D-8 Organisation for Economic Cooperation, Ambassador Isiaka Imam, urged member countries to intensify efforts toward empowering SMEs.

Imam said that SMEs formed the backbone of D-8 economies, accounting for the majority of enterprises and contributing significantly to GDP and employment across member states.

Citing country-specific data, he said that SMEs represented 99.8 per cent of businesses in Türkiye, 96 per cent in Nigeria, 98 per cent in Egypt, and over 90 per cent in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Iran.

He said that the D-8 had taken strategic steps to support SME growth, including the establishment of governmental meetings, signing of a cooperation MoU, and hosting of forums among others.8

Imam expressed hope that the new centre would work with national SME agencies to advance research, training, data sharing, and policy harmonisation.

He urged member states to support the centre in addressing challenges such as access to finance, markets and technology.

The inauguration was attended by government officials, representatives of the D-8 Secretariat, diplomatic community, private sector players and development partners.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the representatives of the member states acknowledged the important role SMEs played in the economic development of their various countries.

They, therefore, pledged their collective commitment to the advancement of the D-8 centre to ensure that it realised its purpose.(NAN)
